How to study medicine in university of Juba

University of Juba is one of the best Universities in South Sudan when it comes to higher education. It's the first choice to consider where to study medicine in the country. However despite being so,  it's quite challenging for a student to study in this university. In this article I will briefly describe the courses offered and then explain what a new student must know before starting to pursue a medical course in this university.

Like other universities in the world, the system in the university of Juba is not that different maybe with few exceptions. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is awarded to a student after completing six years in five phases which is divided into twelve semesters.
Phase I is purely the first year being divided into two semesters. In this phase, the courses provided are: English, Arabic, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry (physical and organic chemistry), biology (botany and zoology) and Sudan foundation now called "Natural resources of South Sudan" (in semester one) and the "Sociopolitical science" (in second semester).
Phase II starts in the second year and ends in the third year covering four semesters (semester 3, 4, 5 and 6). Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry which are the major courses continue till third year whereas English, and community medicine are given in second year (semester 3 and 4).
Phase III (4th year) covers pathology, microbiology (major) and pharmacology (minor) according to student guide 2013-2015. Introduction to surgery and medicine are often given.
In phase IV (5th year), community medicine and forensic medicine are considered the major courses and ophthalmology a minor one.
In phase V (sixth year), Medicine, Surgery, pediatrics,  obstetrics and gynecology are the major courses.

Now let's see what a student must know when joining the college of medicine University of Juba. In phase I,  you don't have much to worry since the courses provided are purely non medical courses. A first year student must attend all the lectures, get all the handouts provided and do all the assignments given. Remember that attendance and assignments plus tests constitute the course work which is 30% of final exam. Never get too excited of joining the college but exert more efforts in studies and use the libruary.
In the other phases, a student needs to have the recommended books for the courses offered. The college exams won't favour you if you don't go through the reference books. Remember this what makes the university tough and distinct from among others. You need to balance your time which is the hardest thing to do in medical school given the volume of information received in short time. Attend all the clinical rounds, make a group discussion and apply the same measures described in phase I.
